The Only Living Pickpocket in New York
2026 Directed: Noah Segan, Written: Noah Segan
Score 5/5
Incredible. The kind of movie that makes you feel like a different person when you walk out of the theater. There’s a nostalgia to it that’s ever present without feeling indulgent or cloying; I think grounded by the characters, relationships, and sense of community that all feel real.
And the music, my god. It opens with New York, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down (LCD Soundsystem) which just sets the perfect mood (apparently also utilized by a Spider-Man: Brand New Day (Cretton, 2026) trailer as every single youtube comment will tell you), followed by an immaculate score by Gary Lionelli. I didn’t recognize the name either, but I’ll be paying attention now. The trumpet forward jazzy riffs in the back half of the movie are fantastic for the tone, elevated by an amazing restraint in knowing when to leave a moment completely silent.
The film ends on one of the most affecting closing sequences I’ve seen in a while. Literally mouth agape in the theater. You should go see The Only Living Pickpocket in New York. It’s beautiful.
